Bizet’s childhood was steeped in music. Carmen, opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet —with a libretto in French by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy —that premiered on March 3, 1875. Georges Bizet, original name Alexandre-César-Léopold Bizet, (born October 25, 1838, Paris, France—died June 3, 1875, Bougival, near Paris), French composer best remembered for his opera Carmen (1875). His realistic approach influenced the verismo school of opera at the end of the 19th century. Premiered on September 30, 1863, this romantic opera is set in Ceylon (today known as Sri Lanka), and shows Bizet’s gift for writing operas with exotic backgrounds, dramatic story lines, and brilliantly colorful orchestrations. The opera was not a huge success and was not performed again until several years after his death.
